Windsor Chairs: English Comb Back
This style is eminently suitable for the dining room or kitchen of a cottage. We use similar ones ourselves as dining chairs. I normally make these with Elm seats and beech components, just like they used to in High Wycombe, but Oak is an alternative. With a stain, shellac and wax finish they look and feel like a genuine antique set, but without the loose joints.
I'll be honest.....rockers are not my favourite chairs. If you have young children they will get their fingers trapped under the rocking rails, and the cat will leave his tail lying around to get squashed. These chairs take up a surprising amount of room, and don't get used as much as normal chairs. But I'm very happy to make one if you want one, don't let me put you off. If you are shopping around for a rocker, you should make sure that the balance is correct. When you sit in the average rocker it will tip you forward so that you have to use your legs to keep the chair at a comfortable angle, so instead of relaxing you are using more effort. Either that or it will lean back and you'll have to climb out! Hopefully mine are well balanced.
