Oak Plank Doors: Handmade by Colin Foxhall.

I'm afraid I can't take orders for Oak Plank Doors at present. I use only air dried Oak, and the only suitable stock I have is a very long way from being usable at present. If this summer (2008) is as wet as the last one, it might never dry!

My Oak plank doors are suitable for cottage style interiors. These are made from local timber dried by the sun and the wind with as little finishing as possible. Planks are of random widths, some are tapered from top to bottom, many have splits, cracks and knots. All are uneven to some extent. The doors are lightly sanded to remove splinters and rough patches, but saw marks are left in. The doors are assembled with special rose head cut nails which are clenched (turned over) on the back of the door. All planks are rebated and overlapped to make the doors peep proof . These doors look as if they are already many years old. They need no painting or finishing of any kind, the Oak will become incredibly hard with age, and normal dirt marking will produce a lovely patina in time. These Oak doors are about as rustic as you can buy. They are heavy, weighing in at up to 35kg (that's 70lbs plus) so make sure your linings or frames are substantial enough to stand up to the extra weight, and that they won't be in a position to slam shut!

Oak plank doors cost from about £190 each (No VAT to pay) for 1982mm by 763mm (that's 78inches by 30inches in old money) , excluding linings or frames, excluding door furniture (which I don't supply but can give a contact) and excluding delivery. Sorry, but I just don't have time to fit doors.

The back of an Oak Plank DoorBack of an Oak plank door. This door has been hanging for a few years and has started to get a patina due to dirt marking and the polishing effect of many hands. Doors can be made with any number of ledges (horizontal bars), and braces (diagonals) can be added if required to doors with three ledges. The little Windsor chair is not one of mine.

These Oak Plank doors are not the cheapest, but then I have been looking after the Oak which has been drying in my yard for a couple of years, and they are individually hand made to custom sizes mainly to fit existing openings. Please contact me with exact sizes of the openings for a quotation.
