Tamar Valley: Kingfisher.

Kingfisher at Capeltor.

I couldn't resist publishing these photos of a kingfisher seen at Capeltor in 2003 near the River Tamar. Capeltor is in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and we try to do our bit by managing the land and river banks for the benefit of all kinds of wildlife. For example in recent years the number of dragonflies has increased dramatically, and we have also had a visitation by hundreds of Lace White butterflies. Although we have seen them before, we got all excited recently when Sally spotted the kingfisher, which seemed to be resident, and we contacted a local wildlife photographer who was able to get some really nice shots. The kingfisher didn't seem the slightest bit bothered by the attention. Although he eventually went all shy and tucked his head under his wing, if you look closely at the second photo you can see he is still watching us. I'm now just waiting for some birdie to tell me it's a female! The photos were taken by Colin Sargent. With his permission I have included a couple of them on this page, and you can obtain copies at decent resolution by visiting his website at colinsargent.co.uk Both these photos copyright Colin F Sargent.
